Thursday October 12, 2017 - Week 27

Malachi is a prophet who preached in Jerusalem post exile and rebuilding of the Temple (early 400's BC).  The city itself had not been rebuilt and the Jewish people where following suit from all the way back to the beginning of their covenant with God.  They were distracted by the secular world around them and began to turn away from God and their faith. Remember, the story of the Jewish people collectively is our story individually as an adopted child of God. We are supposed to learn from their collective experience.

In the Gospel we are reminded that our prayer for things "material" are always responded to by God "spiritually". God knows what we need better than we know what we want... and responds accordingly. Our prayer is should not be an effort to bend God's will to see things our way.  We should use the image of Jesus at Gethsemane; in prayer he brought his petition to his Father... but in the end of the prayer he acknowledged that it was not his will but His Father's will that must be followed.
